Leave it in for 5 minutes and then proceed as you will. You can blanch your turnips in advance, dipping them in cold water after the 5 minutes to stop the cooking, and use them much later if you wish.

    Turnips will smell a lot less if you add 1 teaspoon sugar to the cooking water.
