This classic cocktail is said to be the predecessor of the Martini. Bartender Eben Freeman developed this version at Tailor restaurant in New York City.

Ingredients

1/4 cup (2 ounces) sweet vermouth
2 tablespoons (1 ounce) full-flavored gin such as Junípero
1 teaspoon Maraschino liqueur
1 dash Angostura Bitters
1 cup ice cubes
1 (1-by 1/2-inch strip) lemon zest

Preparation

  1. In chilled cocktail shaker or pint glass, stir together vermouth, gin, Maraschino liqueur, bitters, and ice until well combined. Strain into chilled coupe glass. Twist lemon peel over glass, drop into drink, and serve.
